A pedestrian suffered serious head injuries after being involved in a collision with a van.
The incident happened at about 8.15pm last night when a 29-year-old woman was walking in Upperton Road, Eastbourne, near its junction with Selwyn Road.
She was initially taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital but later flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital, where her condition this afternoon is described as critical but stable.
The van driver a, 45-year-old man from Eastbourne, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He was later bailed until July 11 while investigations continue.
Sergeant Dan Pitcher from Sussex Police's road policing unit said: "We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw a white Peugeot Boxer flat bed van in the area in the time leading up to it.”
