THOUSANDS of patients will have to find a new doctor following a decision to close a practice.

The Central Surgery in Telscombe Cliffs will shut next month following the resignation of its GP Lal Mandal due to ill health.

The practice, which covers the East Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven area, has about 2,700 patients on its books. They are being asked to register with nearby surgeries.

Liz Newman, business development manager of Kamsons Pharmacy group, which has a branch opposite the surgery in Central Avenue, said: “Patients have been surprised and upset and worried about whether they will be able to find another surgery locally.”

Ms Newman said the change could also have an impact on the pharmacy, although patients could still use it as it dealt with prescriptions from all GP practices in the area.

In its most recent Care Quality Commission report the pract-ice was found to failing in four out of five core standards.

Inspectors found the practice needed to make improvements in staffing, management, caring for people safely and providing care treatment and support that met people’s needs.

The alternative practices people can approach are Rowe Avenue Surgery, Meridian Surgery, Foxhill Medical Centre, St Luke’s Surgery, Saltdean and Rottingdean Medical Practice, Chapel Street Surgery and Quayside Medical Practice. Call 01293 729298 for more information.
