I write in response to Liz Brunt’s letter of May 24, regarding an article on the new wheelchair taxi policy in Brighton and Hove.
I agree wholeheartedly with Liz as I too find accessing big cabs difficult due to my short stature and physical disabilities.
The wheelchair policy is a great idea and would help a lot of people but I also agree that there really does need to be heightened awareness of the disabilities other people may have.
I always ensure I book a saloon car and keep to using the same taxi firm – this way, I know I can remain independent without the worry and embarrassment of having to send a big cab away and having to repeat my request for a saloon car.
On the whole, I do think there needs to be some sort of disability awareness available for taxi firms and their employees so there is a better understanding of disabilities across the board. It would be interesting to hear any feedback on this.

I agree with Liz Brunt. Like her, I find it extremely difficult getting into the new-style taxis and need a saloon car.
After hurting my knee getting out of a new-style one, I had to have keyhole surgery on my knee.
I sent an email to the council saying that people need the old-style saloon taxi but no one could be bothered to reply.
Many local taxi drivers feel the same – that the saloon car is best for the majority of people.
