A Sussex singer who busked his way through college is waiting to hear if he will get a shot at winning Britain’s Got Talent.

Richard Hadfield, 20, a labourer from Portslade, is part of operatic five-piece Collabro, who are second favourites to win the £250,000 prize despite not yet having a place in the semi-finals.

Judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams will announce their decision on Sunday’s show.

Richard said: “We are absolutely buzzing about it – all the acts are quite nervous.

“The judges are still making decisions right up till the end.”

The band have been rehearsing intensively to make sure they are ready if they get through.

Richard said: “We are all going up to London to watch the show together. If we go through we’ll have a few beers but we won’t be able to party too much.

“There will be a small celebration but more mental preparation.”

Richard grew up in Portslade and first appeared in The Argus in the summer of 2010 when he earned £3,800 busking in Brighton city centre to pay his school fees for Hurstpierpoint College.

He said: “Brighton is such an amazing place. It’s definitely influenced who I am today.

“When I’ve been busking recently people have been coming up to me and asking about the show. That’s the support that means the most to me.”

Collabro were unanimously voted past the audition stage with their performance of Stars from the hit musical Les Miserables.

Richard said: “The scariest moment so far was coming out on stage in front of the judges.

“They are a lot closer than they look on television – with the adrenaline it’s like you’re watching them in HD. The deliberation will be scarier.”

Also appearing in Britain’s Got Talent is Sam Jones, a 21-year-old ventriloquist from Seaford, East Sussex.

As seen in The Argus yesterday, Sam received a call from Britain’s Got Talent completely out of the blue and still has no idea who nominated him.

Sam is hoping that his appearance on Britain’s Got Talent will help give ventriloquism a younger image and be a positive symbol for people who suffer from Tourette’s.

The results of the deliberation round will be shown on Britain’s Got Talent on Sunday 25 at 7pm |on ITV.
