Mixed fortunes are fore- cast for bank holiday day- trippers, with motorway delays and showers in store.

The weather for Brighton is less than ideal, with light showers predicted for Saturday and bank holiday Monday.

Sunday, however, is expected to be sunny. Brighton and Hove Bus Company bosses are braced for a busy time, with extra buses and drivers on stand-by in the city centre.

To combat motorway congestion the Highways Agency has completed or suspended roadworks near Chichester, Worthing, Shoreham, Crawley and Polegate, but there are still delays expected on the A23 near Haywards Heath.

Motorists heading to or from Chichester on the A27 tonight should avoid travelling too late or find an alternative route.

Resurfacing and general maintenance will cause clo- sures near Chichester between the A285 and the A259 from 8pm, and the A27 westbound exit slip to the A23 near Brighton will also be closed.

Roadworks on the A23 between the A272 and the M23 are expected to cause delays of ten minutes throughout the weekend.
 

A Highways Agency spokesperson said: “To help road users enjoy this bank holiday weekend – and hopefully some fine weather – we will be completing or suspending over 143 miles of roadworks on motorways and major trunk roads in the South East.

“But we still ask people to plan their journeys by making use of the traffic information services we provide.”

Southern and First Capital Connect passengers will be facing disruption, with overnight engineering work across the network.

Buses will replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton in the early hours of Sunday morning.

There are no Southern services going into London Bridge due to improvement works on the Thameslink Line over the weekend.

A spokesman for Southern urged people to check the National Rail Enquiries jour- ney planner online. Gatwick is set to be packed, with about 270,000 passengers expected to depart over the weekend.
