Sales of luxury products rocketed in Brighton last year and continue to sell well in 2014.
The independent price comparison site PriceSpy.co.uk has found that Brighton shoppers splashed out on high-end brands and helped drive an 88% growth in sales of luxury products in the last 12 months.
Only Cambridge at 92% and Oxford at 89% had higher growth in the sale of luxury goods.
Top sellers were premium white goods such as Smeg fridges and KitchenAid food processors, which saw an overall increase of 131%, followed by home cinema systems at 98%.
Another product which saw an upturn in sales was king size beds and mattresses, where total sales almost doubled over the course of a year.
Beats by Dre Headphones were the fourth top seller, designer perfumes fifth and multimedia tablets at eighth.
Steve Gambling, store manager of the Sony Centre, Western Road, Brighton, said: “We’re getting good figures on TV sales.
They’ve really improved in the last few weeks and we’re expecting a peak before the world cup. “The same is true of smart phones. There’s never any shortage of people showing interest and the sales usually follow.
“Things are better and better after an incredibly tough last few years. It’s turned a corner and there’s a lot of optimism particularly with high-end products.”
Jimmy Duque, senior designer at Hove Kitchens, said: “Sales for SMEG are always good. People are attracted to the funky design, which is quite unique.
“Siemens do well as a medium to high end brand, as do Neff and Bosch.
“It’s all relative and depends on the capability of the customer.”
Mary Stewart, of shore shop Mobrog on Bond Street, Brighton, said: “Brighton is certainly one of the best places to go for luxury goods. We’ve got a huge amount to offer in terms of independent and luxury retailers.
“But as far as growth goes I would say it has been quite gradual on the high street, which is quite odd because the property market is moving.”
