Caroline Lucas says “we should be supporting solar power” (Soapbox, May 10) and quotes a new Government poll that reveals 85% of people for it and only 5% against but doesn’t say what the remaining 10% think.

I have tried to find the quoted poll without success.

I can’t imagine members of the public who can’t have solar power for various reasons would be supporters, especially as their electricity bills could be increased to pay for the subsidies solar panel owners may well receive.

Solar power would not provide Balcombe residents with 100% of their needs for the obvious fact that for half of the year we are in darkness and that during the day the sun doesn’t always shine.

I’m afraid the statement that solar farms “take up less than 5% of the land they are on” is out by a factor of ten: any view of existing farms shows that, at best, they take up 50%.

There are too many politicians who pontificate on the subject of renewables which are technically lacking – and that includes the Prime Minister, his deputy and the current Minister for Energy and Climate Change.
