With regard to Ivor Sorokin’s letter (The Argus, May 9), I too am amazed by the lack of foresight being shown by our local authority.

Like Ivor, I also concluded that the best option was to build a new hospital at Toads Hole Valley, and had a letter published on the topic in July 2012.

At the time, I said the prime residential site in Eastern Road could either be marketed or developed.

The funding could be provided by pre-selling the existing site for (and here is where I differ from Ivor) top-of-the-range properties, most with premium sea views. How many luxury flats would fit into the tower block alone?

There would be so much potential profit that the council could insist on various additions to improve transport links to the new hospital.

In my previous letter, I also said that a large underground park and ride facility could form the base of the new development, with a heli pad and bus routes built in. Tunnels could be bored through the hillsides to form the basis of an underground/overground metro system linking the park and ride to all areas of the city.

It’s an expensive idea but there is enough money washing around in Brighton and Hove to make this a reality and so fund a truly 21st century hospital.

Why do we persevere with piecemeal fiddling with an already overloaded infrastructure? Something is eventually going to be built at Toads Hole Valley – why not a new hospital?
