A budding photographer bagged his first celebrity snap on Saturday when television presenter and survival expert Bear Grylls spoke at a Scouting event.

Cub Ethan Lawrence, nine, of Saltdean Scout Group, used his older brother’s digital camera to capture UK Chief Scout Grylls at the District Scouting Celebration at Longhill High School on Saturday.

Ethan’s father Stephen is a freelance photographer and often takes his son on jobs covering council events and cricket matches.

Ethan, a pupil at Saltdean Primary School, said: “It was quite exciting taking the photos of Bear Grylls. “It was difficult with the crowds of people, but I managed to sneak close.

“I also liked taking shots of my friends on the day – I got some good shots of their funny faces. We had a lot of fun.”

Mr Lawrence said: “It was lovely to see his enthusiasm. He came back with some nice photos and a smile on his face.

“Maybe one day he’ll take over the family photography business.”

Ethan added: “I do enjoy coming along with my dad on jobs as they are quite fun events, and I would like to go on some more. He gives me some good tips and ideas.

“I will definitely take some more photos in the future and I might like to do it when I grow up.”

Grylls arrived by helicopter for the event as part of a UK tour to encourage more adults to volunteer for Scouting.

District commissioner for Brighton and Hove Scouts David Simon said: “We had encouraged children, adults and parents to bring along their cameras – mayor Denise Cobb even took a selfie with Bear.

“We encourage scouts to try new experiences and develop a range of skills such as photography.”

The star of the television series Man vs Wild said: “I was super-excited to visit the Scouts in East Sussex.

“I met a lot of inspiring young people who play a positive part in the adventure that Scouting provides.”
