B Parker (The Argus, May 7) is correct in pointing out it was a mistake in the 1960s to leave the Royal Sussex County Hospital in its present location.
By definition this hospital serves Sussex. Yet it has no rail access.
A new centre could have been built in Stanmer Park or even on derelict land next to Brighton Station.
Five hundred yards to the west, the former Kemp Town railway site had potential – up until the 1970s, it had a disused rail link that could have been reinstated.
This failure to relocate has meant the RSCH has evolved with separate buildings being added piecemeal over the years.
Unfortunately the amount of cash spent since the 1960s cannot be written off. The construction of the Millennium wing, the children’s hospital and other buildings renders relocation impractical.
These specialised buildings cannot be converted for other purposes.
Sadly, a mistake more than half a century ago means we are left with our main hospital in its original position. Rebuilding is now the only option and must proceed as quickly as possible.
