I read Phillipa Shaw’s letter about clearing debris and rubbish from the pond garden of Withdean Park (The Argus, May 9).
Aside from the volunteers, why doesn’t the Government, with all our parks and beaches needing attention at seasonal times, get those looking for work and receiving benefits to do a few hours each?
They will be earning their benefits and getting some fresh air at the same time, instead of browsing the internet for jobs or indoors being bored.
A couple of years ago, a group of young offenders were doing this in East Brighton Park, obviously supervised, and seemed to be enjoying every minute of it.
Some on benefits may say they won’t work for nothing – but they won’t be; the Government is already paying them for not working.
It’s just a thought but it would help everyone.
