The Central National School in Church Street was one of Brighton’s most unusual buildings, designed in Regency Gothic style.
Built in 1830, it was ordered by Henry Wagner, the autocratic vicar of Brighton, and occupied a prominent site almost opposite the northern end of New Road.
It closed in 1967 after being neglected and was demolished four years later despite a resolute campaign to save the structure.
The site remained empty for 30 years until the Jubilee Street development was put into effect.
