Tributes have poured in for a councillor who was “an exceptional man with a heart of gold”.
It was announced on Wednesday that Byran Burchmore, a Hailsham Town councillor and former deputy mayor, passed away in the early hours of April 30 at Eastbourne District General Hospital after battling cancer.
Councillor Burchmore, 79, was elected onto the council as an independent in May 2007.
Councillor Geoff Rowe, a long-term friend, said: “Bryan was an exceptional man with a heart of gold. I will miss his ideas, his humour, his friendship and perhaps most of all his ability to always look on the bright side of life.”
“It was a pleasure to work with him on the council as he was extremely dedicated and committed to Hailsham.
“We have lost someone who has made a significant contribution to the life and well-being of the community.”
Councillor Jo Bentley, the mayor, said: “I wish to record my deep appreciation of Bryan’s work as town councillor in recent years, his approachability, his kind nature, and not least his positive outlook on things.”
Councillor Burchmore represented Hailsham South and West ward and served on a number of committees.
His funeral takes place at Eastbourne Crematorium on May 15 at 11.30.
Friends are welcome but flowers from family members only – donations should be passed to Raystede Animal Sanctuary.
