A man from St Leonards was later arrested on suspicion of assault and questioned before being released without charge.
Police are now calling for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
PC Jodie Walter said: "The argument happened outside the store alongside a busy road so lots of people would have seen what happened.
"I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have filmed the incident on their mobile phone.
"If you were there and saw what happened, please contact us."
