Regarding your story about “councillor’s shock at swastika claim” (The Argus, March 29), the “swastik” or swastika has been a religious symbol for thousands of years. Long before being adopted by the Nazis, it was recognised by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists as a sign of good luck and is incorporated in many religious ceremonies.
Even after almost 70 years, for many the swastika still represents one of the most evil regimes in living memory.
The Nazis stole the swastika and took away its real meaning so that Eastern religions show a reluctance to reclaim it for themselves.
A different view, perhaps, but still one worth considering when Councillor Ben Duncan made his comments regarding the cross worn by Mary Mears at a council meeting.
