The letter from R Griffiths (The Argus, March 21) concerning the i360 was enlightening and frightening.

£36 million for a big toy. How did the i360 loan come to be considered?

Seven councillors voted to grant the loan – that sounds like a committee vote. Was it then ratified by full council?

Various council and government departments must have been aware of the potential loan. Is it common practice to award contracts and help finance them?

Councillors are elected from all walks of life but council officers should be on hand to advise them. What advice was given?

As they say after all fiascos: lessons must be learnt.

In view of the public response to this project surely it must be time for an about-turn.

Some ideas look good on paper, like the external glass lift on the Spinnaker Tower; they never did get that lift working.

There is general consensus that the i360 project is a bad idea and, personally, I think there are so many things wrong with it that it is difficult to know where to start.

The design is untested and as such may be prone to costly technical difficulties and malfunction.

How would you get passengers off in the event of a malfunction?

The project is poorly sited and the estimated number of visitors is unrealistic. The turnaround ride time is likely to be long, even if you have punters waiting.

There would be nothing at the top of the ride, just a view which would depend on weather conditions.

I actually think this project is a good idea but badly implemented.

I would much rather see a “skydeck” of a simpler design, and sited nearer the Palace Pier.

It would be of a similar design to the “Skydeck” that was proposed in the early 1960s. It definitely needs to have a cafe on top to give people an extra incentive to go up, even in bad weather. I don’t think the deck should be made to rotate as this adds to engineering problems. The lifts should be internal and of conventional proven design.

I see our weather as a crucial factor in this project. It could seriously affect this attraction.
