Burgess Hill town council could have to find nearly £30,000 in lost revenue after Mid Sussex District Council failed to pass on money to the town, Labour councillors have claimed.

Under government plans to encourage councils to freeze council tax, billing authorities – which in this case is Mid Sussex – are expected to pass on financial support to town councils to help them deal with the lost income from the tax freeze.

But the Burgess Hill branch of the Labour Party has claimed Mid Sussex council failed to pass on the financial assistance, meaning the money must be made up with taxpayers’ money.

David Andrews, a local councillor and Labour group leader, said: “This seems to be typical of the way in which Burgess Hill is treated by the district council; we recall our efforts to have £2 million raised from the sale of the land at The Brow to remain in Burgess Hill, which was turned down by the Tory-run Town Council.”
