According to Bob Bailey, president of Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats, the Liberal Democrats is now Britain’s only party out there giving people the facts about being part of the EU (Letters, March 22).

Are they? Well let me disclose some of the facts they won’t be giving the electorate in the run-up to the European Parliament elections in May.

1) The farce of the EU travelling circus. Once a month the European Parliament decamps from Belgium to France for a meeting lasting a mere four days. They take with them some 2,500 plastic trunks loaded on to lorries and driven the 300 miles from Brussels to Strasbourg. The next day, about 1,000 politicians, officials and translators then make the same journey on two specially chartered trains hired at the taxpayer’s expense. It is the same in reverse four days later. The overall cost to taxpayers for this monthly four days of madness is estimated to be £130 million per year.

2) The European Commission is to take Britain to court over its attempts to “limit” benefit payments to migrants.

3) Neither of the two most prosperous countries in Europe, Norway and Switzerland, are among the 27 fully signed-up EU members.

4) Britain will give an extra £800 million to the EU budget this year on account of the fact our economy is “outperforming” other member states.

Don’t be surprised, Mr Bailey, when that person you describe as wearing a big smile and someone you could have a pint with down the pub (Nigel Farage) blows the Lib Dems out of the water at the European elections in May. The sooner the Government invokes Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty the better it will be for Britain.
