Children at a nursery were treated to an event that was out of this world.

Andy Lawes from the East Sussex Astronomical Society visited the Playcare Nursery in Brighton to introduce the subject of stars, constellations and all things stargazing to the pre-school children.

The children, aged three and four, learnt some fascinating star facts whilst helping to make and launch their own home-made “rockets”.

They were also given a chance to learn how to use a telescope.

Nursery manager Sara Lee said: “Introducing our children to exciting subjects is part of the Playcare Nursery ethos.

“We want to expand their horizons through a programme of activities with anything from musicology to robotics.”

The children were also able to ask Mr Lawes several questions.

Mr Lawes said: “It's the first time we have visited a playgroup as we normally provide activities for ages nine and older.

“The children really asked us some tough questions and maybe our visit will spark an interest in space that will last.

“Hopefully we have inspired some of them to look up at the night sky in a different way.”
