A turf cutting ceremony has marked the start of work on a long-awaited cancer support centre for Sussex.
The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field, was joined by former cancer patients and representatives from Macmillan Cancer Support, the Sussex Cancer Fund and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust for the event.
The centre, due to open in summer 2015, is based next to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
It will offer all-round support for people living with cancer and their families across the county in a calm, friendly and non-medical environment.
A fundraising campaign, backed by The Argus, was launched almost four years ago to create the purpose-built centre.
The building will cost £5.96 million, with Macmillan contributing nearly £3.96 million.
The charity has about £1.3 million left to raise.
