This picture, taken more than a century ago, shows Dennett’s Corner tea gardens. They were strategically located at the spot where the winding road from the Dyke railway station emerged on to Devil’s Dyke road.

The station buildings can be seen at the extreme left of the picture, which was sent in by Mrs L Scott of Steyning.

The gardens secured incoming trade and also consoled thirsty visitors facing a long wait for the return train to Brighton.

Prices were reasonable, with a pot of fresh tea, bread and butter and cake costing a sixpence. But trade declined when the road was improved and buses were able to drive straight to the Dyke with its attractions half a mile away.
