A pedestrian has died after being struck by a Sussex Police car, the force has confirmed.

The car was responding to a report of a disqualified driver at 7.20pm on Wednesday (March 12) evening.

The man, in his 40s, died after being struck on the A259 in White Rock, Hastings.

A Sussex Police statement this evening said: "At 7.20pm a police car was in collision with a pedestrian on the A259, White Rock, Hastings, at the junction with the A21, Havelock Road.

"The pedestrian, believed to be a local man in his 40s, tragically died at the scene shortly afterwards despite the efforts of police officers and paramedics to save him.

"The police car contained two local officers, one of whom was slightly injured in the collision.

"The officers were responding to report that a car driven by a disqualified driver had been seen in the area. That car has not yet been traced.

"The full circumstances of the incident have yet to be established and it will be referred to the IPCC."
