I read with interest the letter from nine-year-old Tabitha Nixon (The Argus, March 6) in which she expresses her concerns about some of the new buildings in Brighton.

First of all, it is so refreshing and encouraging that a person of such a young age cares about her city (I am a native of Brighton too).

All is not as bad as it perhaps seems. Fortunately, Brighton and Hove has some very good and effective civic societies who keep a close eye on developments.

Although not a new building (as far as buildings go, it’s not old either) a favourite of mine is the Jubilee Library (pictured below).

It’s very different in its design but features a strong piece of Brighton history in the form of the navy blue mathematical titles on the wall. These were a feature on early Brighton buildings.

I do hope Tabitha keeps up her interest in her city. You never know, at some point in the future she may even be in position to really have an influence on what is (or isn’t) built there.
