I was saddened to hear of the passing of Don Turner, a former Labour councillor for Brighton and Hove (The Argus, March 6).
I worked alongside Don for a number of years when we both served on the governing body of Mile Oak County Primary School in the 1980s.
I valued his support, experience and advice, particularly when I was chairman – his strength of character and knowledge were great assets to that body.
I am sure these attributes will be missed by many others as well both from his time in public service and on a personal level.

Many tributes have been paid to the service Don Turner gave as a respected councillor.
He also showed great judgement by being a keen supporter of Sussex County Cricket Club.
I had the pleasure of working alongside Don as a board member at Shoreham Port.
His knowledge of the local community and various government agencies proved invaluable when the port was reshaping its planning strategy.
Above all else Don will always be remembered as a thoroughly decent man. My thoughts are with Rita and his family.
