Famous children’s literary characters came to life at a special celebration of World Book Day at schools across Sussex.

Children at Telscombe Cliffs Primary School took part in the annual celebration by dressing up as their favourite book characters.

The children’s often handmade costumes featured characters such as the Cat in the Hat, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, the Gingerbread Man, Harry Potter, Thomas the Tank Engine and David Walliams’s Gangsta Granny.

Damon Willer, head of literacy, said: “The children have absolutely loved it.

It has been very busy, very eventful and a very big success.”

The day was book mad with story writing contests, bookmark making contests and a book themed lunch featuring Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs meatballs and alphabet soup.

Each child received a certificate for dressing up as their chosen character and the two best characters from each class entered into a virtual character parade.

Of the selection chosen for the parade the winners will be decided in assembly today using a random selector and will each get a book voucher.

Each child paid 50p to dress up which is donated to Book Aid International, a charity that provides books to children in Third World countries.

World Book Day is in its 17th year of encouraging children to explore books and celebrating authors, illustrators, books and reading and is the largest of its kind – reaching over 100 countries.

Participating schools receive tokens donated by National Book Tokens Ltd.
