It saddened me to read in The Argus (February 28) about the terrible plight of toads as they make their way across roads at this time of year to reach spawning grounds.

I first became aware of the terrible annual carnage they suffer a decade ago in February 2004 when I came across a sign warning of their presence at Litlington, just outside Alfriston, making drivers aware each year that January, February, March and April are the danger months when hordes of toads are on their way to these ponds.

There is a long period from May to December when toads are out of sight (and out of sight is out of mind) – drivers will forget about the danger time, January to April.

Reminders are needed on television programmes such as Spring Watch.

With 660 registered toad crossings in the UK, the problem is national.

Perhaps a slogan is needed such as “Watch out, Toads may be about” and letters could be franked with warnings. Perhaps other readers could add their ideas.
