In olden times a winterbourne stream known as the Wellsbourne flowed from Patcham down to the sea.

This stream was usually dry in summer. It was diverted into underground pipes as Brighton expanded. Recent problems in Patcham reveal that the current underground pipes are inadequate to drain the areas south of the Downs – I propose that the course of the Wellsbourne be reopened so that in times of very heavy rainfall, the excess water flows harmlessly southwards.

The excavated stream would also act as a barrier to stop caravans parking on the various parks along the valley.
