My cousin who lives in Brighton sent me a cutting from Adam Dennis, Loder Road, Brighton. I lived in Loder Road from 1948 to 1965 and I do indeed remember the grocer’s opposite Mrs Poulton’s bakery – very good 1d buns and doughnuts!
I believe I also remember his grandparents? Was their surname Sparks? If so, Adam’s mother must be Diane (known as Tessa) or her sister whose name escapes me. Diane was a sister who nursed my dad following a heart attack at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in the early 1970s. My dad was caretaker at Balfour Primary School from 1948 to 1978 when he died.
There was also a sweet shop opposite our house at the entrance to Dorothy Stringer High School. It’s now a private house. In the early 1950s a Mrs Rendall owned it, then later a retired couple who came from London. I think their name was Horne and she later married Mr Ellis after her first husband’s death.
There was also Redwoods greengrocers on the corner of Bates Road and Loder Place – my mum worked there part time.
