A school in Lancing has been put into special measures by Ofsted.

The Globe Primary School’s overall effectiveness was found to be inadequate, and inspectors gave the lowest rating to the achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, leadership and management.

The behaviour and safety of pupils was said to require improvement.

In the school’s last Ofsted report, in February 2012, it received an overall effectiveness rating of 3 – meaning that the school required improvement.

The new Ofsted report stated: “School leaders and managers at all levels have not done enough to improve the school since its inspection and key aspects of its work are less effective than they were.”

The school is working on an action plan with the governors and senior leadership team to deal with the problems laid out by Ofsted.

Linette King, the school’s chair of governors, said: “We must address all the issues raised and be open about what did not go well.

“The management team, staff and governors are determined to come out of special measures as quickly as possible. The next year will be challenging, but we will emerge a better school.”

The school has also arranged a meeting with parents to discuss the results of the report.

One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I’m shocked and concerned that the only positives in the report are that the children arewell-behaved, polite and attendance is up.

“All of these are thanks to a good upbringing and parenting, not school education.”

Another said: “We are shocked at the report, particularly as parents attend regular home learning sessions with the head teacher.

Rather than pressurising parents to attend these they should put their own teaching house in order.”

Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, who is a former Parliamentary under- Secretary for children and families, said: “I have always enjoyed a close and positive relationship with the Globe School and am always impressed whenever I visit.

“I was therefore very surprised that the school has been put into special measures by Ofsted and even more concerned about the way the inspection appears to have been carried out.

“I am therefore keen to work closely with the staff, governors and parents to get to the bottom of how this happened and more importantly work with them to get the school back on the upward trajectory that it deserves.”

The school was praised in some areas, saying that behaviour throughout the schoolwas goodand that the children had a high level of social and emotional well-being.

Children in reception year were also noted to be making good progress.
