Commuters could get some musical entertainment while they wait for trains if a piano gets the go-ahead for Brighton station.

Peter Kyle, Labour parliamentary candidate for Hove, has offered to cover the costs of getting a piano on the terminal to bring some musical accompaniment to people’s daily commute.

Mr Kyle said: “Brighton and Hove is a creative city, packed full of talent.

“Just think how much of that talent passes through the wonderfully renovated central station at any one time?

“With all the delays and the travel chaos what better way to raise people’s spirits than to have a piano.”

After seeing the people playing a piano stationed in St Pancras Station in London, Mr Kyle tweeted the offer to buy a piano for the Brighton platform for passers-by to stop and tickle the ivories.

He has also since sent a letter to Chris Burchell, managing director of Southern, making a formal offer to buy the piano.

Mr Kyle said in his letter: “I would love to work with you to see if a suitable place could be found in our fantastic station to place a piano.

“Think of the potential to delight passengers as they spend a moment waiting for a train, or at other times when it could dissipate the frustration felt by people facing delays or those who have been battered by the weather on their journey to the station.”

St Pancras International station currently has two old pianos on the station floor, both of which are readily available for public use.

Mr Kyle, who is himself not a |musician, said that while his first pledge would be to buy the piano, his second would be never to play it.

He also said he would cover any maintenance costs and the cost of having the piano removed should it be vandalised.

A spokesman for Southern said: “We think this is a great idea, but we have to look into the practicalities of it.

“We’ll be responding to Mr Kyle’s letter once we have gone through that process.”
