This picture shows the start of building Brighton Marina more than 40 years ago. Enormous concrete containers called caissons were used to form the western breakwater.
Each one, weighing 600 tons and almost 40 feet high, was lowered into position by a crane and then filled with another 1,000 tons of concrete.
The western and eastern breakwaters had a total of 110 caissons and enclosed 77 acres of water. Fears that they would not stand up to wild weather proved unfounded.
Work on the harbour was completed in 1978 and the marina was opened by the Queen a year later.
The picture was sent in by Alan Dart of Storrington.
