The other day, I received a new leaflet on changes to recycling days in Brighton, with guidelines as to what to put in my bins.
I was distressed to note that no Tetra Paks and no plastic other than bottles will be collected for recycling.
The majority of our plastic food packaging ready for collection clearly states that it is “recyclable at a larger Sainsbury’s”.
The leaflet explains that the council won’t collect pots and tubs etc because “there is less demand for them by plastic recyclers”.
Less is not zero. Green initiatives can only be effective if embraced fully by local authorities.
Am I to understand that the combined collection date and this half-hearted attempt at recycling is due to cost-cutting, or is there a valid reason for ignoring such a significant proportion of items which we could avoid throwing into landfill?
