Schoolchildren are two thirds of the way running from Addis Ababa to Hanoi after a soggy day at Hove Park.

More than 7,000 primary school students have begun their 7,289km mission and today will be the last stretch.

Schoolchildren from Brighton and Hove have been donning their togs for Run the World on Wednesday and yesterday and pupils from Worthing will pick up the baton today.

Over the course of three action-packed days, which started at Preston Park in Brighton on Wednesday, children between the ages of seven and 11 will be on the fitness trail as they cover a kilometre each.

Twenty-two Brighton schools and 14 from the Worthing area have signed up a total of 7,864 pupils who will cast aside their text books for the day in return for a taste of a virtual journey of a lifetime.

Yesterday, the young runners did not let the damp conditions deter them from completing their 1,000m.

Today, runners will clock up the metres at Homefield Park in Worthing.

Andy Shaddick from Southern Water, who is sponsoring the event, said: “We are delighted to again be supporting this fantastic sporting challenge.”
