High-flying painters prove they have not lost their sense of humour despite spending the best part of a fortnight sharing a tiny lighthouse.

Specialist crew from Hailsham-based Sussex Blast Cleaners have been scaling the Beachy Head Lighthouse to add a £27,000 new coat of paint on the iconic building.

The team has had to share the tight surrounds of the lighthouse which has sleeping space for just five people although they had a weekend back at home to avoid the risk of cabin fever.

Did this story make you chuckle? Here are some more recent quirkies to tickle your fancy:

Historian Rob Wassell, who took the picture, said: “It was written by one of the guys as he was doing some of the preparation with primer paint.

“They have completed one of the white stripes and it looks so much brighter and whiter than before.

“Unfortunately there's been a couple of days where the weather hasn't allowed them to carry out the work but if all goes well it should be finished next week.”

Update: the lighthouse is now looking pristine, as can been seen in this picture from Lucy-Ann P on Twitter (also see above):
