It is sad that Labour has made unseating the extremely popular and effective local MP, Caroline Lucas, the only Green MP in the country, as one of its top 20 priorities at the next general election. Surely it should instead be prioritising fighting the coalition Government’s policies on the economy and the environment.

Ed Miliband said in his interview (The Argus, September 26) that only Labour stands for defending the environment and social justice.

What nonsense. Caroline Lucas has opposed the Government on a whole range of issues while Labour has supported them or sat on the fence.

Caroline has opposed fracking and renewing Trident missiles, and called for massive investment in renewal energy.

The Greens have a fine record of opposing the Government’s austerity programme and so-called benefit “reforms” – the local Green-led council was the first to oppose the “bedroom tax” for example. And Caroline was the first to call for the re-nationalisation of the railways.

Local people will look to her consistent and proud record in standing up to the Government when they cast their votes at the next general election.
