Councillors have arranged a meeting about plans to turn a golf course near Rottingdean's historic windmill into a “Segway court”.

Brighton and Hove City Council is currently in negotiations with firms to take over the lease of the Rottingdean pitch and putt area.

The preferred bidder is understood to be a leisure firm which wants to use it as a base for the two-wheeled vehicles.

In a statement, Conservative ward councillors Lynda Hyde, Mary Mears and David Smith said: “We are well aware of the proposal which was brought forward when the contract for the site was retendered some while ago.

“Opponents may not know that an alternative proposal has also been made to include the site in the Beacon Hill Nature Reserve.

“As ward councillors for the area we want to see a use for this site which the local residents are happy with and we will continue to listen to what they have to say.

“In the meantime, we have arranged a meeting between Brighton and Hove City Council, Rottingdean parish councillors and the two proposers to see if a way forward can be found.”

Meanwhile Nancy Platts, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown, appealed to politicians to support her in opposing the “outrageous destruction” of the hill.
