An elaborate listed bollard which starred in a Hollywood film is to be replaced – nine months after it was damaged.
The finely-decorated Grade II listed metal stumps stood outside the Regency Tavern in Russell Square, Brighton, for more than 70 years.
But after one of the bollards was smashed on New Year’s Eve, town hall bosses replaced it with a plain stump leading to locals dubbing them “little and large”.
Did this story make you chuckle? Here are some more recent quirkies to tickle your fancy:
After pressure from locals, Brighton and Hove City Council has now confirmed it will restore the pair, which featured in the opening scenes of 1948 film Brighton Rock.
A council spokeswoman said: “The original bollard was not in a fit state to be repaired so we have arranged, with the Regency Square Society, to install a replacement.
“This type of bollard is not unique. We have several unused examples in storage which just need a small amount of detail work in order to replicate the original.
“One of our contractors is carrying out this work and expects to install the bollard next month.
“As the work is still in progress we do not have specific costs, but we expect it to be no more than a conventional bollard replacement.”
