This picture shows the old entrance to the Aquarium in Brighton before it was modernised in the 1920s.
Now the Sea Life Centre, it was the largest aquarium in the world when it opened in 1872. The designer was Eugenius Birch, better known for his piers.
The clock, a well-known landmark in Brighton, was moved a few yards to the neighbouring Palace Pier.
Although the pier is now the most popular tourist attraction in the South East, it was oddly deserted on the day this picture was taken. The theatre at the end was in place but the Palace Of Fun and the restaurant had not yet been built.
