The Argus carried a very interesting centre spread about grassroots football here in Sussex (September 24).

It was arguing that there could be a case for following our non-league teams for a fraction of the cost of perhaps travelling to London to watch the Spurs or Arsenals of this world.

I have spent the past few seasons following Crawley Town up and down the country, including its historic FA Cup exploits and getting into the Football League.

Last season, I managed every league away game.

Unfortunately, with the club going up the leagues, it became apparent there was quite a hole developing in my own domestic budget so something had to give.

While I am still passionate about what is happening for Crawley Town at the Broadfield Stadium, my matchdays this season will be taken up with my very local club, Burgess Hill FC, as the club’s new programme editor.

Ten matches into the season, the ethos of community spirit, traditional values, honest football and, of course, value for money is ringing true.

An FA Cup win against Alton turned into a lovely day out where most of us had a lot of fun.

To other readers of The Argus I would say there are plenty of opportunities to watch non-league football here in Sussex.

Why not go along to your local club and give it a go?
