Sussex Police officers have closed off an area of Warrior Square in St Leonards, Hastings, after reports of an alleged rape of a 20-year-old girl this morning (Friday, September 27).
The girl is reported to have been raped at around 2.30am.
Officers are keen to speak to a grey-haired woman who was in the area at the time of the alleged offence and who shouted out, causing the attacker to run off.
Detective Inspector Gavin Patch, of East Sussex CID, said: "Specially trained officers are with the girl to give her support and find out more about the attack. Police are looking at local connections which the suspect may have.
"Officers are making local enquiries, but I would appeal to anyone with information about this incident to telephone Sussex Police on 101, quoting Operation Anzac. Alternatively they can leave any anonymous message with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
