There was an interesting comment by transport minister Norman Baker in your story headlined, “Price people out of cars” (The Argus September 23).
He says, “I was in southern Germany for a holiday a few years ago. I forget which town it was, but there were no cars in the centre at all.”
Surely Mr Baker remembers that Brighton had a massive rail goods yard, mail trains and a continuous coastway rail service across Brighton. Rail fares were also less expensive than using a car.
I recently went by car from Hove to Eastbourne International Airshow. Street parking was free and the car journey lasted half the time it would have taken a coast train from Hove, hence why cars are prevalent across our city.
