Councillor Jason Kitcat accuses Conservatives of opportunism regarding plans for a new school at King’s House (The Argus, September 18).

This was discussed at cross- party working groups on July 5 and 17, at which councillors Buckley (Green) and Pissaridou (Labour) agreed to progress the idea with their political groups.

I have it in writing from Coun Buckley that she did inform Coun Kitcat and Green children’s spokesperson Sue Shanks of the proposal “weeks ago”. I therefore continued to work on the idea with a view to updating them.

Councillor Andrew Wealls, Conservative, Brighton and Hove City Council

I am disappointed that Coun Wealls chose to make political capital about a subject that causes parents and carers so much worry and anxiety.

He knows that council officers have been asked to look at all possible sites in Hove suitable for a new school. Councillors of all three political parties have put forward suggested sites to be considered.

The officers have also been asked to confirm the number of children we are expecting to go into our primary schools over the next few years.

The officers’ findings and recommendations will be reported back to the Children and Young People Committee where they will be debated and informed decisions reached.

This is an important decision and not one that can be made lightly.

Councillor Anne Pissaridou, Labour and Co-operative, Brighton and Hove City Council
