PC Pete Cooke, based at BTP Brighton, said: “A 16-year-old woman from Sompting was on the platform at Lancing with two young cousins when she noticed another woman, who was accompanied by three children, at 1.36pm.
“The victim overheard the second woman making racist comments towards her as they stood near each other on the platform, and these continued on the train to Brighton which both parties boarded.
“The woman who was targeted with the comments got off at Brighton, as did the woman alleged to be making them, and the pair exchanged words as they left the station.”
BTP officers now want to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, particularly the woman pictured, who was in the area at the time and could have key information.
Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting background B15/LSA of 19/09/2013.
