Labour activists in Brighton and Hove have welcomed their party colleagues to the city – with one potential MP politely asking they respect the place.

About 10,000 delegates from across the country are expected to visit for the annual event.

For members of Brighton and Hove Labour it gives them a chance to get national support on campaigning for local issues.

With 2015 seeing local and national elections on the same day, it is hoped this will give them momentum to try and win back the three MP seats the party lost in 2010.

Addressing delegates, Peter Kyle, the party’s candidate for Hove, said: “It's great that the thousands of delegates arriving over the weekend will see Brighton and Hove at it’s best.

“The sun will be shining and the restaurants will be buzzing so there's no better place to have a conference.

“Enjoy yourselves, keep safe and don't forget to respect our beautiful city.”

Purna Sen, Labour’s candidate for Brighton Pavilion, said: “It’s great to have conference in this wonderful city.

“Together we must make it work for all who live and work here - young, old unemployed, homeless, minorities.

“At conference we affirm our commitment and renew our energies to make this country work for us all, not just the few.”

Warren Morgan, Labour group leader on Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “I'm delighted to welcome Labour colleagues back to the city for Conference 2013 and I’m delighted that it will be a boost to local businesses.

“I hope that delegates enjoy not just the sea air and great hospitality we have to offer, but leave infused with some of the renewed energy and campaign enthusiasm we have for taking on the Tories and their divisive policies.”
