Opposition leader Ed Miliband put the bedroom tax at the top of the agenda in a 'town hall'-style speech in Brighton today.

The leader is in the city for the Labour Party Conference and fielded questions in New Road, near the Royal Pavilion Gardens.

He said Labour was the party of the many, not the few, and promised to campaign on behalf of people like Neil, from Rye, who had been hit by the bedroom tax.

Mr Miliband said: "I’m fighting for Neil who lives in Rye, who is disabled and lives in adapted home.

"David Cameron is imposing bedroom tax on Neil and he’ll have to pay £100 per year extra, while giving tax breaks to hedge funds and the construction industry.

"Is that fair?

"We’re going to fight for Neil and hundreds like him."

When asked by The Argus how Labour would overcome the Green Party, he said his party was leading on environment.

He said: "People say we can't afford to make environmental commitments. But I say we can't afford not to make environmental commitments.

"It is Labour that has the world-leading target on climate change."
