Richard Szypulski believes the fairest way to finance local government is to abolish local taxes altogether, with central government picking up the bill, paid out of general taxation (Letters, September 14).
Considering this extra tax burden will just fall on the working poor and middle-income earners and let wealthy pensioners in large homes off the hook, I think most people already struggling financially will believe this to be totally unfair.
I am sure most people believe that local taxes (council tax), based on the size of their home and their income, is by far the simplest and fairest system we will ever have.
