Nearly £3,000 has been raised for Help for Heroes in memory of a soldier who died after plunging 1,000ft off Mont Blanc.

Friends and family of 30- year-old David Martin, affectionately known as Blondie, have donated thousands towards the charity in his memory.

They have also shared memories of Mr Martin, who grew up in Willingdon, Eastbourne, and died on August 28 after slipping and falling as he descended on the Italian side of the mountain.

His family, including parents Bernard and Rowena Martin, have now asked his friends to donate money to the charity in aid of injured servicemen and women rather than provide flowers.

Mr Martin was a lieutenant in the Royal Logistics Corps but was off-duty when he died.

Writing on the tribute page to Mr Martin, Jessica Swale said: “Howfewand far between are people who radiate such spirit and joy and live their lives so full to the brim.

“Blondie was one and I feel privileged to have known him.”

Other tributes came from Siobhan Storey, who said: “Blondie, always smiling and having fun” and Louise Gander, who added: “I have so many happy memories growing up with you and your family. Your happy nature will be missed.”

Adding her memories, Helen Gibbins said: “I know you have been an important part of lots of people’s lives. I will never forget your amazing energy and zest for life.”

Chris Pursey described Mr Martin as “inspiring”, while Alex Beard said: “You were the most brilliant person who I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

“Your infectious enthusiasm, love for life and waddle you call a walk will be sorely missed forever.”

Peter Smith said: “I’m proud to have known such a fantastic person, who was always enthusiastic and fun to be in the presence of.

“I often think about the studies we did along the Sussex coastline.”

Emma Tay said she had “never met such an inspirational and dedicated young man”.

She described him as an “absolute gent who never stopped smiling”.

Mr Martin’s funeral will take place at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Church Street, Willingdon, on Friday at 1pm, followed by a private family interment.
