A spectacular festival that celebrates Japanese culture and cuisine has hit Brighton’s Old Steine this weekend.
The ten-day event, known as Brighton Japan, showcases Japanese arts, theatre, film and food.
Dominic, 35, of Kemp Town, a volunteer photographer for the event, said: "It’s a great celebration of Japanese culture where local businesses with Japanese interests can come together for the community."
Admission to the festival is free and includes a wide range of activities from workshops in Japanese calligraphy and Manga drawing to stalls serving sushi and other authentic food. There are also theatrical shows and musical events.
Louise Thorpe, 19, from Brighton, attended the festival with two friends, and all three arrived in cosplay dress.
Cosplay, short for 'costume play', is an especially popular activity in Japan and sees participants dress up as their favourite Manga characters.
Louise was dressed as Hatsune Miku, a Japanese Vocaloid character, with bright blue hair and silver dress. She said: "It's really fun to dress up as the character you like the most. It's a really social event and there's so much cool stuff to do."
Another cosplay enthusiast who wowed the crowds with a full-body outfit identified himself as Titan Defender Pushka. The fan, real name Leo, 31, from Brighton, said: "I discovered this character when living in Japan for a few years. I enjoyed the costume and just added items to it, bit by bit, over the years. It's pretty warm inside though. If it's a blazing hot day tomorrow I may have to give it a rest!"
Brighton Japan is running in the Old Steine until 22nd September.
