I am in total agreement with the woman who doesn’t want the service charge included in her overall bill at the Otello restaurant in Hove (The Argus, September 5).
I know that in some restaurants the service charge taken in this way is not passed on to the serving staff.
There are even some restaurants who add a service charge and then, if paying by card, give you the option of adding a tip.
In addition, some are even charging more than 10%.
When possible, I too use cash to pay for service. If it hasn’t been that good I leave less than 10% and if it has been excellent I leave more.
The solution is for the customer to eat elsewhere if they are not happy. There are plenty of restaurants in that area of Hove and I certainly wouldn’t go to a restaurant if a customer was banned for not paying the extra charge on their card or preferred to use cash instead.
We should support the waiters and waitresses who no doubt rely on these extras to supplement their pay.
