An iconic structure was taped off after a man was found leaning against it with a head injury.
Police were called to Kings Road, Hove, at 9.45pm on Wednesday to a man with a head injury leaning against the Peace Statue.
He was taken to a nearby shelter where he collapsed and was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital suffering with a head injury.
Detective Inspector Lee Horner said: "This man does appear to have some historic injuries but there has been no report he has been assaulted or any offence have taken place.
“However at this time we are keeping an open mind until we have spoken to him and can work out what has happened."
He remains in hospital being treated.
Anyone with information or saw him in the area is asked to contact police on 101 quoting serial 1636 of 11/9.
